This component award is designed to equip the learner with the skills and knowledge necessary to care for those with special educational needs either in the home or an educational setting. The module aims to promote awareness and increase knowledge with regard to teaching theories, methods and approaches as well as equipment for those with special educational needs.

Entry Requirements / Prerequisites

  • FETAC Level 5 Certificate in Childcare or equivalent qualification or relevant experience.
  • As this programme is delivered through distance learning, students must be capable of studying on their own initiative.
  • Students must be competent in both written and spoken English.
  • If you take this course by distance learning the course material will be posted to you.  You can complete and return assignments/projects which must be typed rather than handwritten either by post or by email.
  • If you take this course by eLearning you will need basic IT skills and have access to broadband.
  • As part of the assessment criteria for this course students’ will need to carry out observation demonstrations, all candidate’s who enroll for this course must have the agreement from their supervisor/manager in the work place to oversee their practical work.

Progression to further Studies:

  • This course leads to a level 6 award on the National Framework of Qualifications.
  • Students who successfully complete this programme may use this Level 6 credit towards completing a Major FETAC award.

Assessment:

Project 50% x 2

Project: The internal assessor will devise 2 project briefs that require candidates to produce evidence that demonstrates an understanding and application of a range of specific learning outcomes.

The first project will require the candidate to conduct 4 observations on a child and devise and Individual Education Plan including a Needs Strengths analysis as well as suggestion for curriculum adaptation.

The second project requires the candidate to conduct in-depth research into an area of Literacy; highlighting the difficulties that can be faced as well as suggested teaching strategies and approaches.

Grading:

Pass 50 – 64%
Merit 65 – 79%
Distinction 80 – 100%

  • Following successful completion you will receive a FETAC component Certificate in Special Needs Teaching Assistant (L32334) at Level 6.
