Entry Requirements / Prerequisites

  • Level 4 Certificate, or Leaving Cert, or equivalent, or relevant life and work experience.

  • As this programme is delivered through distance learning, students must be capable of studying on their own initiative.
  • If you take this course by distance learning the course material will be posted to you.  You can complete and return assignments/projects which must be typed rather than handwritten either by post or by email.
  • If you take this course by eLearning you will need basic IT skills and have access to broadband.

Progression to further Studies:

  • This course leads to a level 5 award on the National Framework of Qualifications, you can use the credit received for this course towards completing the major award in Media Production.

Collection of Work 60%

Collection of Work:

The internal assessor will devise guidelines for candidates on gathering a collection of work that demonstrates evidence of knowledge of topic, research skills and writing skills.
The collection will include one example of a hard news story, a review article and a feature article, each exploring the same social, political or cultural issue or event.

Assignment:

The internal assessor will devise a project brief that requires candidates to demonstrate:

  • understanding of the production process
  • design skills
  • visual, media and technological awareness.

The project brief will require candidates to layout one page of either a tabloid or broadsheet paper in a specified house style. The articles written for the collection of work may be used in the project.

Accreditation:

  • Following successful completion you will receive a FETAC Level 5 component Certificate in Print Journalism (E20013).
  • The Further Education and Training Awards Council (FETAC) is the national awarding body for further education and training in Ireland.
