Who should complete this course?

    • People who wish to gain a professional, accredited qualification by home-study distance learning.
    • The module is designed to offer the learner the opportunity to develop, practise and gain credit for a range of key generic personal and interpersonal skills which are important in dealing with many situations in the workplace.

Learners who successfully complete this course will:

  • develop a range of skills relevant to their daily activity
  • work effectively within the organisation.

This distance learning, FETAC accredited course means that Students can study flexibly at home, or at any convenient place and time, and can gain a nationally accredited Qualification.

Students receive a comprehensive Course Manual, Assignments, Efficient Studyguide, and unlimited one-to-one Tutor Support for the course duration. The course documentation for this FETAC certified course is detailed and easy to read. If students require extra time to complete the course they can apply for an extension.

Assignments may be emailed or posted  to the College whichever is more convenient.

Topics covered include:

The specific learning outcomes are grouped into 6 units.

Learners must complete units 1 and 2, and may choose two others from units 3-6.

  • Unit 1: Organisational Awareness
  • Unit 2: The Individual and the Organisation
  • Unit 3: Problem Solving
  • Unit 4: Presentation Skills
  • Unit 5: Effective Meetings Skills
  • Unit 6: Participating in Groups.

 

Preferred entry level:

  • Level 4 Certificate, Leaving Certificate or equivalent qualifications and/or relevant life and work experiences.
  • Learners are expected to be proficient at reading, drafting, preparing and understanding information across a broad range of topics, including quantitative information for a Level 5 award and more complex information for Level 6 award.
  • As this programme is delivered through distance learning or eLearning, students must be capable of studying on their own initiative.

Programme Entry Requirements:

  • If you take this course by distance learning the course material will be posted to you. You can complete and return assignments/projects which must be typed rather than handwritten either by post or by email.
  • If you take this course by eLearning you will need basic IT skills and have access to broadband.
  • All participants must have access to a professional environment to fulfill the Skills Demonstration assessment requirements of the course – which is at least 20 hours work experience for minor awards.

Progression to further Studies:

  • This course leads to a level 5 award on the National Framework of Qualifications.

Assessment:

Skills Demonstration 60%

Candidates will demonstrate two of the following skill areas:

    • problem solving
    • presentation skills
    • meeting skills
    • participating in groups

Collection of Work 40%

The internal assessor will devise guidelines for candidates on gathering a collection of work that demonstrates evidence of a range of specific learning outcomes in Units 1 and 2. The collection will include an organisational profile and a personal profile.

Accreditation:

  • Following successful completion you will receive a FETAC Level 6 component FETAC Level 5 Certificate in Personal Effectiveness in the Workplace (G20033).
  • The Further Education and Training Awards Council (FETAC) is the national awarding body for further education and training in Ireland. The Open College is registered with FETAC to offer programmes leading to FETAC awards in the National Framework of Qualifications in Ireland.
