Learners who successfully complete this course will:

  • demonstrate detailed knowledge of the concept of mediation and its contexts
  • be familiar with the key principles and practices underpinning mediation
  • critically evaluate the different approaches to be used when dealing with conflict and impasse
  • demonstrate skills in mediation and case work
  • demonstrate knowledge and application of ethical guidelines and principles
  • consider the impact on the practitioner of working with people in conflict
  • actively promote their own learning and reflexivity as mediators
  • understand the importance of supervision in developing both competence and confidence.

  • The Concept of Mediation
  • Models of Mediation
  • Mediation Practice
  • Case Development and Management.

Preferred entry level:

  • Leaving Cert (or equivalent) and/or relevant work and life experience.
    Learners are expected to be proficient at reading, drafting, preparing and understanding information across a broad range of topics, including quantitative information for a Level 5 award and more complex information for Level 6 award.
  • Some assessments require completion of work, which must be observed and evaluated by a supervisor or manager

Special Entry Requirements:

  • Learners must have prior demonstrable interest in mediation and have supervised access to live cases for practice purposes.

Progression to further Studies:

  • This course leads to a level 6 award on the National Framework of Qualifications.

Assessment:

This award is assessed through a series of assessments, which are submitted by the student. This includes written assignments, a personal learner record and skills demonstrations. Some assessments require completion of work, which must be observed and evaluated by a supervisor or manager or in class. There are no exams with this course.

As part of our quality assurance, student assessment work will be marked by an Internal Assessor, validated by a Verifier with an independent FETAC External Authenticator to complete the process.

Accreditation:

  • Following successful completion you will receive a FETAC Level 6 component Certificate in Mediation (N32796).
  • The Further Education and Training Awards Council (FETAC) is the national awarding body for further education and training in Ireland. The Open College is registered with FETAC to offer programmes leading to FETAC awards in the National Framework of Qualifications in Ireland.
