Who should complete this course?

  • Students who wish to gain a FETAC credit in Legal Studies at Level 5.
  • Students who wish to obtain a general understanding of legal principles and to enable them to appreciate the role of the law in their personal and vocational lives. It is also intended to prepare learners for employment or further study in related areas.

Learners who successfully complete this course will:

  • develop a general understanding of the Irish legal system
  • evaluate the impact of the law on their personal and vocational lives
  • develop skills in evaluation and analysis
  • be familiar with the language, procedures and documents related to the law in their vocational area
  • appreciate the importance of respecting confidentiality in all legal communications and business transactions.

This distance learning, FETAC accredited course means that Students can study flexibly at home, or at any convenient place and time, and can gain a nationally accredited Qualification.

Topics covered include:

  • Unit 1: Introduction to the Irish Legal System (Compulsory)

In addition the following 4 Modules must be completed:

  • Unit 2: Children and the Law
  • Unit 3: Employment Law*
  • Unit 4: The Irish Constitution
  • Unit 5: Legal Documents*

* Special Requirements: This module may be combined for the purposes of certification with Business Law B20131 provided there is no duplication in the choice of optional units.

Preferred entry level:

  • Level 4 Certificate, Leaving Certificate or equivalent qualifications and/or relevant life and work experiences. Learners are expected to be proficient at reading, drafting, preparing and understanding information across a broad range of topics, including quantitative information for a Level 5 award and more complex information for Level 6 award.
  • As this programme is delivered through distance learning or eLearning, students must be capable of studying on their own initiative.

Programme Entry Requirements:

  • If you take this course by distance learning the course material will be posted to you. You can complete and return assignments/projects which must be typed rather than handwritten either by post or by email.
  • If you take this course by eLearning you will need basic IT skills and have access to broadband.

Progression to further Studies:

  • This course leads to a level 5 award on the National Framework of Qualifications.
  • Students who successfully complete this programme may use this Level 5 credit towards the FETAC Major award in any of the following areas:

The internal assessor will devise two briefs that require candidates to produce evidence that demonstrates an understanding and application of a range of specific learning outcomes. Each brief will require candidates to investigate topic(s) appropriate to the Irish legal system and in the context of the candidates’ vocational area.

The internal assessor will devise a theory-based examination that assess candidates’ ability to recall and apply theory and understanding, requiring responses to short answer and structured questions. These questions may be answered in Different media such as in writing or orally.

The examination will be based on a range of specific learning outcomes and will be 2 hours in duration.  Examinations are usually held in Dublin but arrangements can be made for those living outside Dublin to sit this examination in an area convenient to where they live but there will be an additional charge for this arrangement to cover venue and supervisory fees.

  • Following successful completion you will receive a FETAC Level 5 component Certificate in Legal Studies (B20132).
  • The Further Education and Training Awards Council (FETAC) is the national awarding body for further education and training in Ireland.
