Who should complete this course?

  • understand their own role in the prevention of the spread of infection.

This distance learning, FETAC accredited course means that Students can study flexibly at home, or at any convenient place and time, and can gain a nationally accredited Qualification.

Unit 3: Healthcare-Associated Infections

  • blood borne pathogens.

Unit 4: Health Management: Corporate and Individual Responsibility in relation to Infection Prevention and Control

  • the health information and quality authority
  • national standards
  • infection prevention policies
  • role of the infection control team
  • needle and sharps prevention and management
  • first aid management if injury occurs.

Preferred entry level:

  • Level 4 Certificate or Leaving Certificate or equivalent qualifications and/or relevant life and work experiences.

Programme Entry Requirements:

  • If you take this course by distance learning the course material will be posted to you. You can complete and return assignments/projects which must be typed rather than handwritten either by post or by email.
  • As part of the assessment criteria for this module learners will be required to carry out practical demonstrations, with this in mind learners will need to be involved or be able to identify a work placement where they will be able to carry out these tasks.
    Alternatively if you are unable to find a work placement The Open College can offer learners at no extra cost a half day training course in Dublin or Louth in order to carry out the Skills demonstration assessment as part of this course. Dates and times will be confirmed once learners indicate requirements.

Progression to further Studies:

  • This course leads to a level 5 award on the National Framework of Qualifications. Learners can use this credit towards completing a FETAC Major award in any of the following areas:

Assessment:

Learner Record 50%
Examination 30%
Skills Demonstration 20%

Learner Record: A personal Learner Record will be completed by each candidate. It will take the form of a workbook which will be completed over a period of time and will be signed off by both the Assessor and the Workplace Line Manager.

Examination: Students will sit a one-hour, multiple-choice examination consisting of 20 questions. They will be required to answer any 15.

Skills Demonstration: Candidates will be observed carrying out a Hand Hygiene related to specific learning outcomes.

Grading:

Pass 50 – 64%
Merit 65 – 79%
Distinction 80 – 100%

Please note all exams will take place at our offices in Dublin or in a location in Louth and will incur a €50.00 examination fee.

Accreditation:

  • Following successful completion you will receive a FETAC Level 5 component Certificate in Infection Prevention and Control (N22816).
  • The Further Education and Training Awards Council (FETAC) is the national awarding body for further education and training in Ireland. The Open College is registered with FETAC to offer programmes leading to FETAC awards in the National Framework of Qualifications in Ireland.
