Who should complete this course?

  • Learners who wish to acquire skills in experiment digital photography and post-production imaging. It aims to provide enhanced skills and knowledge that are currently required within the photographic industry.

Learners who successfully complete this course will:

  • enhance creativity through the practice of photography.
  • examine a photographic business idea and consider if there is a market for same.

This distance learning, FETAC accredited course means that Students can study flexibly at home, or at any convenient place and time, and can gain a nationally accredited Qualification.

Students receive a comprehensive Course Manual, Assignments, Efficient Studyguide, and unlimited one-to-one Tutor Support for the course duration. The course documentation for this FETAC certified course is detailed and easy to read. If students require extra time to complete the course they can apply for an extension.

Assignments may be emailed or posted  to the College whichever is more convenient.

  • The Camera
  • Post-Capture Production
  • Digital Photographic Storage and Printing
  • Presentation and Finishing Techniques.

Preferred entry level:

  • Level 5 Certificate, Leaving Certificate or equivalent qualifications and/or relevant life and work experiences. Learners are expected to be proficient at reading, drafting, preparing and understanding information across a broad range of topics, including quantitative information for a Level 5 award and more complex information for Level 6 award.

Course Requirements:

Learners will need to own or have access to the following list of equipment to complete the course.

  • A digital Camera – Point and Shoot or DSLR with a minimum of 6 mega-pixel with at least a standard 50mm lens, (preferably a wide angle to telephoto zoom) and a flash either on camera or a separate off – camera flash.
  • (NB. Students work will not be judged by the equipment on which it is taken, but on the quality and creativity of the work itself.)
  • A tripod or monopod would be advisable but not essential.
  • A laptop or desktop computer ( either PC or Mac) students must be computer proficient,
  • Access to the Internet.
  • Imaging software, Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, PaintshopPro (PSP)  free programs such as GIMP or  Paint.net ( PC only) are available for  download and work well  , or other imaging software of your choice.
  • A flatbed scanner.
  • A printer capable of producing Photographic quality prints .
  • Memory cards, CD  or DVD burner USB memory sticks.

Programme Entry Requirements:

  • If you take this course by distance learning the course material will be posted to you. You can complete and return assignments/projects which must be typed rather than handwritten either by post or by email.
  • If you take this course by eLearning you will need basic IT skills and have access to broadband.

Progression to further Studies:

  • This course leads to a level 6 award on the National Framework of Qualifications. Successful students can use this credit towards a major award in any of the following areas:
    AAAXX Arts Administration
    AABAX Arts and Business
    AIXXX Illustration
    APAPX Professional Arts Practice
    EMPRO Media Production
    EPHOT Photography.

Assessment:

Candidates will be assessed by briefs that have been set down by the internal assessor; candidates will have to complete three tasks:

Collection of Work 50%
Project 30%
Workbook 20%

Collection of Work

Using digital capture and photo-manipulation equipment the learner must produce a folio of 30 finished images-stored on CD R or USB Key. Each photograph must be 16”x 12” and presentable for public display.

50% of the final folio images must show at least 2 changes from the original captured image.

The candidate should present 18 photographs showing the following:
Exploration of 2 themes from the set list below
Social Documentary Sport Family Life Leisure and Entertainment
Art and Culture Fashion the Business World

Project

The candidate should present 12 photographs showing the following from using photo-editing software.
Layers (4 prints)
Photomontage (2 prints)
Color correction (2 prints)
Scanned objects (2 prints)
Distortion (2 prints)

Workbook

The workbook should support the folio of photographic prints and contain evidence of:

  • assignment planning
  • a statement of intent in keeping with the set themes
  • techniques used in image manipulation
  • digital camera operation
  • image storage in camera
  • image transfer
  • knowledge of lighting conditions, time of day
  • knowledge of in camera White Balance
  • digital computer workstation design.
  • computer specifications and requirements for
  • digital imaging
  • computer peripherals and storage devices.

All written evidence must be accompanied with the learners own photographs and illustrations. Learners must produce their own written material (typed). Photocopies of technical material or class handouts are not acceptable. A day-to-day personal diary of all theoretical and practical work undertaken by the candidate is essential.
The total workbook should contain a minimum of 3000 words.

Pass 50 – 64%
Merit 65 – 79%
Distinction 80 – 100%

Accreditation:

  • Following successful completion you will receive a FETAC Level 6 component FETAC Level 6 component Certificate in Digital Photography (L32575) from FETAC.
  • The Further Education and Training Awards Council (FETAC) is the national awarding body for further education and training in Ireland.
