Who should complete this course?

  • Students who wish to gain a FETAC credit in Introduction to Nursing at Level 5.
  • Students wishing to complete the major award at Level 5 in Community and Health Services – Nursing Studies award.

Learners who successfully complete this course will:

  • outline the history and development of nursing
  • acquire a knowledge of the structure and function of the health care service in the Republic of Ireland
  • know the various disciplines and specialities within nursing
  • understand the nursing process
  • appreciate the models of care
  • be aware of nursing ethics and etiquette in care situations
  • communicate effectively in ways that are consistent with the carer’s role
  • avoid occupational hazards
  • become familiar with common nursing/medical terminology
  • perform a range of basic skills.

This distance learning, FETAC accredited course means that Students can study flexibly at home, or at any convenient place and time, and can gain a nationally accredited Qualification.

UNIT THREE: THE IRISH HEALTHCARE SYSTEM

  • the multidisciplinary team
  • role of specialised disciplines = non-nursing.

 UNIT FOUR: CLINICAL OBSERVATIONS & SAFE PRACTICES

UNIT FIVE: INFECTION PREVENTION & CONTROL

  • the infection process
  • hospital acquired infections
  • standard precautions & transmission based precautions

Preferred entry level:

  • Level 4 Certificate or Leaving Certificate or equivalent qualifications and/or relevant life and work experiences.

Programme Entry Requirements:

  • If you take this course by distance learning the course material will be posted to you. You can complete and return assignments/projects which must be typed rather than handwritten either by post or by email.
  • If you take this course by eLearning you will need basic IT skills and have access to broadband.
  • As part of the assessment criteria for this module learners will be required to carry out practical demonstrations, with this in mind learners will need to be involved or be able to identify a work placement where they will be able to carry out these tasks.
    Alternatively if you are unable to find a work placement The Open College can offer learners at no extra cost a half day training course in Dublin or Louth in order to carry out the Skills demonstration assessment as part of this course. Dates and times will be confirmed once learners indicate requirements.

Progression to further Studies:

  • This course leads to a level 5 award on the National Framework of Qualifications. Learners can use this credit towards completing the Level 5 Certificate in in Community and Health Services – Nursing Studies award.

Assessment:

Examination (Theory-Based) 50%
Skills Demonstration 50%

Examination: The internal assessor will devise a theory-based examination that assesses the candidate’s ability to recall and apply theory and understanding, requiring responses to a range of question types, short answer and structured. These questions may be answered in different media such as in writing or orally. The examination will be based on a range of specific learning outcomes and will be 2 hours in duration. The format of the examination will be as follows:

Section A
12 short answer questions
Candidates are required to answer 10 (2 marks each).

Section B
4 structured questions
Candidates are required to answer 3 (10 marks each).

Skills Demonstration: In one or more skills demonstrations, candidates will be observed carrying out the following tasks:

1. measurement and recording of temperature
2. measurement and recording of pulse
3. measurement and recording of respiration
4. measurement and recording of blood pressure
5. measurement and recording of fluid balance.
The tasks may be assessed over a period of time.

Grading:

Pass 50 – 64%
Merit 65 – 79%
Distinction 80 – 100%

Please note all exams will take place at our offices in Dublin or in a location in Louth and will incur a €50.00 examination fee.

Accreditation:

  • Following successful completion you will receive a FETAC Level 5 component Certificate in Introduction to Nursing (D20012)
  • The Further Education and Training Awards Council (FETAC) is the national awarding body for further education and training in Ireland.
