Programme Aims and Objectives:

The purpose of this module is to equip the learner with the skills necessary to ensure children within their care have the best access to the early childhood curriculum. They will gain a full understanding of early childhood educational theories and the practical implementation of these theories into everyday life in the early childhood environment.

Learners will also gain an understanding of the different programmes models used to aid early childhood learning. They will recognise the different theories on the adult’s role within the learning processes along with the importance of on-going personal and professional development.

Learners who successfully complete this course will:

  • acquire an understanding of early childhood programmes
  • understand the integrated role of learning, development and curriculum/programmes
  • appreciate the range of features involved in effective early childhood programmes
  • explore the role and responsibilities of the supervisor and the childcare worker in relation to programme practice
  • appreciate the interrelationship between planning, implementation, evaluation and curriculum/programmes.

This distance learning, FETAC accredited course means that Students can study flexibly at home, or at any convenient place and time, and can gain an Internationally Recognised Qualification.

Programme Entry Requirements:

  • Level 5 Certificate or equivalent.
  • Learners must currently be working (or on work experience) in the childcare sector for a minimum of 6 hours per week, throughout the module, as assignments will require learners to draw upon practical experience.
  • As this programme is delivered through distance learning or eLearning, students must be capable of studying on their own initiative.
  • If you take this course by distance learning the course material will be posted to you. You can complete and return assignments/projects which must be typed rather than handwritten either by post or by email.
  • If you take this course by eLearning you will need basic IT skills and have access to broadband.

Progression to further Studies:

  • This course leads to a level 6 award on the National Framework of Qualifications. Learners can use this credit towards completing the Level 6 Major Award in Early Childhood Care & Education – 6M2007.

Project:

A project brief will be devised into three sections:

  • Section 1 – Critical evaluation of area in early childcare setting
  • Section 2 – Influence of early childhood theorists
  • Section 3 – Evaluate adults role in early childhood development.

Skills Demonstration:

Learners are required to set up a Learning Programme suitable for a child or group of children aged 0 – 6 years old. This programme must comprise of a number of learning activities,  no more than ten in total, which address the five areas of development, physical, intellectual, language, social and emotional.

The learning activities may address one or more areas of development however the overall Learning Programme must include all five areas. The Learning Programme should be based on a theme for example “Easter” with learning activities involving tasks related to Easter.  It is important that each learning activity is age relevant.

Learners are required to set up a learning activity suitable for a child or group of children aged 0 – 6 years old.
The learner will be marked on a number of areas including:

  • Collaborative Planning
  • Description of Learners plan
  • Effective collaboration of plan to staff members and children
  • Implementation of Learning Program
  • Scheduling  / time frame of task
  • Organisation of the Supervision of task
  • Definition of designated roles within learning programme
  • Interactions with Children and Staff
  • Clear instructions for staff
  • Clear instructions for children
  • Displays non-judgmental attitude
  • Change/Alterations
  • Realistic alternative plan
  • Deals with unexpected behaviour.

Accreditation:

  • Following successful completion you will receive a FETAC Level 6 component Certificate in Early Childhood Curriculum (6N1944).
  • The Further Education and Training Awards Council (FETAC) is the national awarding body for further education and training in Ireland.
