Who should complete this course?

  • Students who wish to gain a FETAC credit in Criminal Law at Level 5.
  • The purpose of this module is to provide learners with a thorough understanding of the principles of criminal law and to enable them to appreciate the role of criminal law in their personal and vocational lives. It is also intended to prepare learners for employment or further study in related areas.

Learners who successfully complete this course will:

  • develop a general understanding of the Irish Criminal System
  • develop an appreciation of the elements required for a crime to be committed
  • evaluate the impact of relevant legislation governing the various aspects of criminal law to be investigated
  • acquire skills in evaluation and analysis
  • be familiar with the language and procedures elated to the various aspects of criminal law studied.

This distance learning, FETAC accredited course means that Students can study flexibly at home, or at any convenient place and time, and can gain a nationally accredited Qualification.

The specific learning outcomes are grouped into 5 units.

Unit 1: Introduction to the Irish Criminal Law System
Unit 2: The Criminal Court System and Arrest and Detention
Unit 3: The Crime of Homicide
Unit 4: Theft, Burglary, Aggravated Burglary and Robbery
Unit 5: Defences to a crime.

Preferred entry level:

  • Level 4 Certificate, Leaving Certificate or equivalent qualifications and/or relevant life and work experiences. Learners are expected to be proficient at reading, drafting, preparing and understanding information across a broad range of topics, including quantitative information for a Level 5 award and more complex information for Level 6 award.
  • As this programme is delivered through distance learning or eLearning, students must be capable of studying on their own initiative.

Programme Entry Requirements:

  • If you take this course by distance learning the course material will be posted to you. You can complete and return assignments/projects which must be typed rather than handwritten either by post or by email.
  • If you take this course by eLearning you will need basic IT skills and have access to broadband.

Progression to further Studies:

  • This course leads to a level 5 award on the National Framework of Qualifications.
  • Students who successfully complete this programme may use this Level 5 credit towards the FETAC Major award at Level 5 in Legal Studies (BLSXX)

Assessment:

Assignments x 2: 60%
Examination (Theory- Based): 40%

Assignments:

The internal assessor will devise two briefs that require candidates to produce evidence that demonstrates an understanding and application of a range of specific learning outcomes.

Each brief will require candidates to investigate topic(s) appropriate to the Irish Criminal System and in the context of the candidate’s vocational area. Topics for each assignment will be drawn from different units of the module. The assignments may take the form of a court case report, a small scale research study or investigative report. The evidence for each assignment will include:

  • an application of the main principles of criminal law
  • relevant examples and/or case law
  • an evaluation of the impact of the law on individual’s personal and vocational lives.

All assignments carry equal marks

Examination
The internal assessor will devise a theory-based examination that assess candidates’ ability to recall and apply theory and understanding, requiring responses to short answer and structured questions. These questions may be answered in different media such as writing or orally.
The examination will be based on a range of specific learning outcomes and will be 2 hours in duration.

The format of the examination will be as follows:

Section A:
6 short questions
Candidates are required to answer any 5 (2 marks each).

Section B:
4 structured questions
Candidates are required to answer any 3 (10 marks each)

Accreditation:

  • Following successful completion you will receive a FETAC Level 5 component Certificate in Criminal Law (N22762) from FETAC.
  • The Further Education and Training Awards Council (FETAC) is the national awarding body for further education and training in Ireland.
