Who should complete this course?

  • Students who wish to gain a FETAC credit in Caring for Children 0-6 years at Level 5.
  • Students who wish to learn the skills and knowledge to care for children from 0-6 years either in the home or as part of a supervised team in a childcare setting.

Learners who successfully complete this course will:

  • understand the responsibilities involved in caring for children
  • care for the physical needs of children from 0-6 years
  • promote good practice in caring for children
  • maintain an environment for children that is healthy, hygienic and safe.

This distance learning, FETAC accredited course means that Students can study flexibly at home, or at any convenient place and time, and can gain a nationally accredited Qualification.

Students receive a comprehensive Course Manual, Assignments, Efficient Studyguide, and unlimited one-to-one Tutor Support for the course duration. The course documentation for this FETAC certified course is detailed and easy to read. If students require extra time to complete the course they can apply for an extension.

Assignments may be emailed or posted  to the College whichever is more convenient.

Topics covered include:

  • Unit 1: Safety
  • Unit 2: Health
  • Unit 3: Feeding Babies and Children
  • Unit 4: Nappy-Changing and Toileting

Preferred entry level:

  • Level 4 Certificate, Leaving Certificate and or relevant work/life experiences.
  • Students must currently be working (or on work experience) in the childcare sector for a minimum of 4-6 hours per week, throughout the course, as assessments will require learners to draw upon practical experience and to also complete the Skills Demonstration element.
  • As this programme is delivered through distance learning or eLearning, students must be capable of studying on their own initiative.

Programme Entry Requirements:

  • If you take this course by distance learning the course material will be posted to you. You can complete and return assignments/projects which must be typed rather than handwritten either by post or by email.
  • If you take this course by eLearning you will need basic IT skills and have access to broadband.

Progression to further Studies:

  • This course leads to a level 5 award on the National Framework of Qualifications. Learners can use this credit towards completing the major award in Childcare DCHSC.

Skills Demonstration 40%

Examination (Theory-Based) 20%

Skills Demonstration: In one or more skills demonstrations, candidates will be observed carrying out two of the following tasks chosen at random by the internal assessor in your workplacement on the day of assessment:

  • sterilizing, preparing and heating a baby’s bottle
  • bottle feeding and winding a baby
  • spoon feeding a baby
  • changing a baby’s nappy
  • bathing a baby.

For each task the candidate will be assessed in the following skills:

Organisation of the Task
The candidate will collect all relevant materials and equipment, organise the area and prepare for the task.

Procedure
The task will be carried out in the correct order, and completed accurately and efficiently.

Care Practice
Throughout the task, the candidate will communicate effectively  with the child and any other adults/children that may be present.

Health and Safety
The candidate will prepare, carry out and complete the task using safe and hygienic practices. The area will be left clean and tidy when the task is completed.

Recording
The candidate will complete a brief record of the task.

First Aid Certificate
Each candidate will complete a First Aid Certificate recognised by the Health and Safety Authority.

Project: The internal assessor will devise a project brief that requires candidates to demonstrate their understanding of health and safety issues in a childcare setting.
Through the project, candidates will also demonstrate:

  • their understanding and application of concepts in caring for children
  • use of relevant research skills and sources of information
  • their ability to analyse, evaluate, draw conclusions and make recommendations.

Examination: The internal assessor will devise a theory-based examination that assesses the candidate’s ability to recall and apply theory and understanding, requiring responses to a range of short answer questions. The examination will be based on a range of specific learning outcomes and will be 1 hour in duration. The format of the examination will be as follows: 12 short answer questions Candidates are required to answer 10 (2 marks each).

All participants must have access to a professional Childcare environment to fulfil the practical assessment requirements of the course.

Accreditation:

  • Following successful completion you will receive a FETAC Level 6 component Certificate in Caring for Children 0-6 years (D20159).
  • The Further Education and Training Awards Council (FETAC) is the national awarding body for further education and training in Ireland.
