Who should complete this course?

  • Students who wish to gain a FETAC credit in Business Law at Level 6.
  • The module is designed to enable the learner to gain an in depth understanding of the Legislative Environment in which a modern business must survive. Learners will be aware of and be able to apply the Legislation that applies to their particular area of business.

Learners who successfully complete this course will:

  • appreciate the importance Law for the business organisation.
  • understand how an organisation needs to be aware of the Legal environment in which it operates.
  • understand the role of Legislation in a modern business environment.
  • be familiar with relevant legislation.
  • develop an appreciation of importance in Legal Practice and Procedure.

Topics covered include:

The specific learning outcomes are grouped into 7 units. Learners must complete units 1 and 2 and select a minimum of 3 others from units 3-6.

Mandatory Units:

Unit 1: Introduction to the Irish Legal System
Unit 2: Contract Law

Elective Units: (select a minimum of 3 units)

Unit 3: Commercial and Consumer Law
Unit 4: Company Law
Unit 5: Law of Torts
Unit 6: E.U. Law

Preferred entry level:

  • Level 5 Certificate, Leaving Certificate or equivalent qualifications and/or relevant life and work experiences. Learners are expected to be proficient at reading, drafting, preparing and understanding information across a broad range of topics, including quantitative information for a Level 5 award and more complex information for Level 6 award.
  • As this programme is delivered through distance learning or eLearning, students must be capable of studying on their own initiative.

Programme Entry Requirements:

  • If you take this course by distance learning the course material will be posted to you. You can complete and return assignments/projects which must be typed rather than handwritten either by post or by email.
  • If you take this course by eLearning you will need basic IT skills and have access to broadband.

Progression to further Studies:

  • This course leads to a level 6 award on the National Framework of Qualifications.
    Students who successfully complete this programme may use this Level 6 credit towards the FETAC Major award in any of the following areas:
    BAXX Administration
    BMANX Management
    BBMSX Business.

Assessment:

Assignments x 2 – one on each Core Unit 50%
Project on the Elective Units 50%

Assignments:

The internal assessor will devise two briefs that require the candidates to produce pieces of work of a minimum of 1500 words each which will allow the candidate to demonstrate his/her skill in applying the law to a given workplace scenario. Topics for the assignments will be drawn from each of the core units. The assignments may take the form of a court case report, a small research study or investigative report. The evidence for each assignment will include:-

  • An application of the main legal principles.
  • Relevant examples or case law.
  • An evaluation of the impact of the law on individuals and/or business.

Project:

The internal assessor will devise a project brief that requires candidates to demonstrate their ability to analyse, evaluate, draw conclusions and make recommendations on issues relating to Legal Matters in a Business Environment. The finished project should be a minimum of 3000 words. The project brief will focus on a broad range of specific learning outcomes relating to the three elective units chosen and will require students to:

  • Compile a report on the implications of the relevant Legal issues in a workplace.
  • Demonstrate an understanding and application of legal Principles and concepts.
  • Investigate the relevant policies and procedures of a workplace.
  • Analyse, evaluate, draw conclusions and make recommendations as to the compliance of an organisation with legislation.

Accreditation:

  • Following successful completion you will receive a FETAC Level 6 component Certificate in Business Law (L32638) from FETAC.
  • The Further Education and Training Awards Council (FETAC) is the national awarding body for further education and training in Ireland.
