Who should complete this course?

  • Students who wish to gain a FETAC credit in Business Law at Level 5.
  • The purpose of this module is to provide the learner with a general understanding of the main elements of law that impact on business. The focus of the module is on both the theoretical basis for business law and on the practical applications in a business organisation. It is intended to prepare the learner for employment or further study in related areas. It has been developed as an elective vocational module for a range of business certificates at Level 5.

Learners who successfully complete this course will:

  • gain a basic understanding of the Irish legal system
  • gain an understanding of the impact of legislation on the business environment
  • gain an introduction to principles of the law of contract
  • gain an introduction to the principles of law relevant to a range of business practices (e.g. company law, consumer law, conveyancing)
  • be familiar with the legal language, procedures and documents relevant to their vocational area
  • develop skills in analysis and critical evaluation
  • appreciate the importance of health and safety legislation within the workplace
  • appreciate the importance of respecting confidentiality in all business communications and transactions.

Learners are expected to be proficient at reading, drafting, preparing and understanding information across a broad range of topics, including quantitative information for a Level 5 award and more complex information for Level 6 award.
  • As this programme is delivered through distance learning or eLearning, students must be capable of studying on their own initiative.

Examination: (Theory-Based) 40%

Assignments (2):

The internal assessor will devise two briefs that require candidates to produce evidence that demonstrates an understanding and application of a range of specific learning outcomes.
Each brief will require candidates to investigate topic(s) appropriate to the Irish legal system and within the context of the candidates’ vocational area. Topics for each assignment will be drawn from different units of the module. The assignments may take the form of a court case report, a small scale research study or investigative report.

The evidence for each assignment will include:

  • an application of the main legal principles
  • relevant examples or case law
  • an evaluation of the impact of the law on individuals and/or business.

All assignments carry equal marks.

Examination

The internal assessor will devise a theory-based examination that assesses candidates’ ability to recall and apply theory and understanding, requiring responses to a range of short answer and structured questions. These questions may be answered in different media such as in writing or orally. The examination will be based on a range of specific learning outcomes and will be 2 hours in duration.

The format of the examination will be as follows:

Section A

  • 6 short answer questions
  • Candidates are required to answer 5 (2 marks each).

Section B

  • 4 structured questions
  • Candidates are required to answer 3 (10 marks each).

Accreditation:

  • Following successful completion you will receive a FETAC Level 5 component Certificate in Business Law (B20131) from FETAC.
  • The Further Education and Training Awards Council (FETAC) is the national awarding body for further education and training in Ireland.
